Top Gun: Maverick star Jennifer Connelly shares her character’s history with Maverick and reveals whether she’d be up for another flight.
Top Gun: Maverick finally flew into theaters this weekend, quickly making history by achieving the highest Thursday gross ever for Paramount. The long-awaited sequel to 1986’s Top Gun follows Peter “Maverick” Mitchell (played by Tom Cruise) once he’s been tested over the course of his long career in the Navy and is now in a position to pass the torch of knowledge on to the newest recruits.
Though Top Gun: Maverick introduces several new characters, such as Vice Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson (Jon Hamm, Mad Men), Maverick’s boss, many elements of the story are vestiges from the original. Young aviator Rooster (Miles Teller, The Offer) is the son of Maverick’s best friend Goose, who died in the first film, and his love interest Penny Benjamin (Jennifer Connelly, Snowpiercer) was actually mentioned by Goose in Maverick‘s predecessor.
